Weather

I've added a weather forecast to almost all areas on the site (some are missing if we don't have the location of that area recorded). It will automatically update every few hours.

Example (look near the top right):
mountainproject.com/v/color…

Report bugs here. If your favorite area doesn't have a weather forecast, reply to this post, tell me which area it is, and I'll get it updated.

Such an awesome idea. Im pretty psyched about it.. I was actually just looking for a "plan B" area if it rains on the Front Range all weekend, this helps alot.

Howdy Nick, is there a way to do a simple visual forecast per state? Something where if it is raining in the top half of the state, one can see if any crags are rain free in the bottom half? Climbing Weather Dot whatever used to have this but they ditched it for some reason. What would be ideal is a shot of the state and a simple icon showing the conditions or each crag (or general area) then if you need finite details, you can click on a crag.... but the concept would be that if the Mountains look wet you could see if it would be dry in the low lands or other places nearby. Choosing the next few days from a drop down would be helpful too. Does that sound reasonable or too much of a PITA? Thank you for adding the weather widget, I use it plenty, as is!

Nick isn't with MP anymore, but thanks for sharing that feedback. I don't want to get your hopes up but I'll make sure it gets into the mix for consideration :)

you can get gridded precip model outputs here: https://mag.ncep.noaa.gov/model-guidance-model-parameter.php?group=Model%20Guidance&model=GFS&area=NAMER&ps=area

use the ptot (total precip), or precip_24 (24 hour precip) or even precip_06 (6-hour precip) outputs over the time range you're interested in. times are in GMT, so subtract 6-9 hours depending on where you are. the 850_temp_mslp_precip loop is a pretty good big-picture look at the weather in the US is going to do for the next 2 weeks (though much less accurate after 7 days or so).

ETA: don't @ me, ECMWF stans.

Thank you Zander, I sure do miss that CW.com map view, where it showed the weather for each crag, much like you all do for climbing areas on the MP "near me" map. Another person is trying something similar here, but there is still no state view, or map view... of all the crags.

NKane, I tried your solution but it is about as user friendly as a rusty old Link Cam. I am sure the data is solid but... (well see for yourself.)

Thank you both. Hopefully someone has a good tool we all can use. Thank you in advance ya'll.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
