Description

This area is a popular destination for river folks, as it has many campsites garnished with nice sandy beaches and Precambrian gneiss outcrops. There are 3 small towers here, with routes on 2 of them. The tower on the right is Ron's Tower, named after Ron Kirk, who had a tragic accident while attempting the middle unclimbed tower.

There is quite a bit to do in this area . . . exploring, cliff jumping, fishing, lounging. It can become crowded on the weekends, but has about 10 designated campsites. Please sign up for one at the launch register. The BLM folks are doing a good job of managing a tough situation. They do not yet require a permit (thankfully), but mandate that everyone register at the launch to minimize campsite conflicts. Please follow the rules so that this area stays permit free and lightly regulated. A portable toilet and firepan are required.

Thanks to the BLM and a bunch of volunteers for cleaning up the trash, fire refuse, and killing all the tamarisk along this corridor. They have also planted over a hundred cottonwood trees recently. There are buckets at most of the sites for watering the trees. Please take a moment and water one.

Getting There

This area is actually in Colorado, but only a couple of miles from the Utah border. Launch on the Colorado River at Loma. Float about 14 miles to the Black Rocks. These towers are obvious to the south, at the entrance to Moore Canyon.

Take out at the Westwater ranger station. Permits are required to float farther.
