Turkey Rock - huge crowd this weekend

Just FYI there is a group of about 30 that will be taking over the Turkey Rock area this weekend, and probably mostly congregating at the Perch area. Certainly not trying to tell people not to come here, just know that it will be a lot busier than normal and could be frustrating for people trying to avoid the crowds.

I'll also be bringing around 30 - 40 folks to the Perch area this weekend. Our local chapter of the American Ninjutsu/Ninpo Federation is doing a team building exercise and will be setting up multiple rappels across the Perch cliffs. Not telling anyone not to come here, just don't be alarmed if you see a couple dozen ninjas speed rapping down your proj.

Of course, we'll be doing all of this at night, so chances are you won't even know we're there.

Though it is certainly nice of you to try and warn people, another perspective is that taking over an uber popular crag with 30 (!?!?) people on what will arguably be one of the nicest weekends of the fall season is perhaps...I dunno...super inconsiderate. It reminds of the guides in Lee Vining canyon in California during winter weekends. They cover the cliff in topropes and the effect is that the cliff is essentially shut down for anyone else. Perhaps if you want to take the crag over, then a set of weekdays is a more considerate choice. Food for thought I guess.

Pick up your trash, your tape trash, your cigarette butts, your dog's shit, your shit and anybody else's trash. The rock's used to be able to handle a fair amount of traffic but since it has gotten to be a destination area it has to be taken care of.Fire's,floods and people have taken their toll.

You know he wrote the guidebook for the area, right? I find it funny that MPer's are talking down to him as some sort of noob. I appreciate the warning, I was actually considering going here. Those 30 people have just as much right to use the crag as the rest of you. I appreciate knowing it before I make the approach.

And I'm going to guess that it has something to do with this.... mountainproject.com/v/south…

Ya'll want fancy guidebooks with purty pictures, but bitch when people show up to take said photos.

"The" guidebook?

Several were written before his and his does not include this area anyway. FYI.

I've met him once before and he seems like a great guy. But does this grant some special privilege nonetheless?

No ball cupping is necessary but neither is telling someone they can't bring a large group somewhere to climb. Plenty of rock out there people...go get some. Thanks for the heads up.

Yes, I realize there were guidebooks prior to the one he co-wrote (thanks for the correction, Ed). I do not own the guidebook, it appears you are correct, the current one does not cover TR, but the one he is working on does, hence the link to the book he is working on.

"Does this give him special privilege?" What special privilege are you talking about? The people climbing at the crag have just as much right as you or anyone else to climb there. They just happen to be in a larger group. This is not a special privilege. This is the same privilege we all exercise on a regular basis, he was just courteous enough to inform you that quite a few people will be exercising that privilege.

Search and rescue party for the missing puffy?

Yes, he has the "right" and I have the right to take a party of 12 up the Bastille crack. It just would not be cool to do that on a very popular route.

Keep in mind, this "taking over" is for a "for profit" guide book. A bunch of his friends taking photos of themselves to publish in his book. Instead, a request for photos from the community would yield many great photos from many years of climbers at turkey rocks without the cluster that is ensuing today.

I agree with J Albers sentiment.

He's been there, asked that already.

haha I figured this thread was going to gain some steam.

Although I thoroughly dislike crag gangbangs, at least he was nice enough to let people know. Better than showing up and finding out the B.C. climbing school has 30 regis students thrutching on 5 topropes and having to turn around and drive 45 mintues home.

Yeah, at least he gave a heads up to people that would have otherwise driven and hiked for hours only to find the crag being CFed.

So, what times Sunday. All day? Will you guys really be posting up at the Perch primarily? There's other rock there. So this isn't necessarily a deal breaker...

No I don't. I much prefer well drawn topos, like those drawn by Rolofson and Rossiter.

The crowd today was small, and everyone was super nice... but I swear to god if I ever have to climb above toddlers walking around below me with NO HELMET I'm bringing beenie babies and having target practice! For real though, I climbed like a rusty bucket of shit today and if I lost a biner or cam down the route, or a rock? yeeeessshhh. That be a news story I would not walk to be involved in. I guess I should have said something, maybe I was being the baby, but when I got down they were so damn cute just chillin in their little tents... you have a right to be there yes, but please be safe and be safe with your little ones if you chose to bring them. The barking dog on the other hand, JESUS!

I definitely prefer well drawn topos of routes to pictures because they highlight key features and distinguishing characteristics of the lines much more effectively than pictures ever could.

I never understood the whole baby at the crag thing. It seems overly audacious to me.

Rather the kids than the dumb ass barking dogs. Put a nipple in a babies mouth and they get real quiet, come to think of it so do I.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
