Trip down south - conditions, trip tips

Hey all,

Two friends and I are taking a trip south from New Hampshire for spring break. We plan on making Chattanooga the epicenter for our climbing, going to Obed, T-Wall, LRC. We also plan to try and hit Rocktown and Horsepens.

As of now, the conditions for the week look to be fairly rainy. Which areas around Chattanooga tend to be dry, or climbable in the rain?

Also, any tips for the first trip? in terms of training, staying healthy, packing, anything like that? Just general tips from the wise.

thanks.

I made the thread in that first link. Very disappointed to see the 10 day weather forecast is calling for rain from 3/9 straight to 3/15. Anyone know how accurate the 10 day forecasts are in the area? Likely to change?

Another question, 3/14 was going to be our first climbing day. There's a solid 4 days of rain leading up to that day (and as of right now saying rain 3/14 and 3/15), even if 3/14 clears up and doesn't rain, will the rock be dry after a soaking like that?

Mostly, no.

However, Little River Canyon, the Obed (apparently), and a couple other of the driest spots will still be climbable.

But, you were after bouldering...

Looking at the forecast, mmmyeah....it doesn't bode well, but you should be okay within a day and a half or two for most anything, if drier and somewhat breezy.

Y'all ping me closer to time and I'll give you the local rundown.

bouldering? I'd say you'll be relatively undeterred. Cragging?.....with as much rain/snow as has been leading up to the upcoming week....and with a week of precip forecasted, I'd say most places are going to have some significant drip/seep if it is dry on your planned days......and probably SOL if its raining on those days

I am hoping the chunk of rain leading up to and starting my trip will be the last of the rain for the rest of the trip. If it is raining my first weekend I figure we will probably meet up with a friend who will be in Obed regardless Saturday and then checking out the Dayton Pocket roofs on Sunday.

Is Little River Canyon the same LRC that Stone Fort is also known as? Or different areas?

Little River Canyon is a sport climbing area in Alabama. Little Rock City (LRC) aka "Stone Fort" is a bouldering area north of Chattanooga.

Tieranny in the Obed will likely be dry.

There is a LOT of water in Chattanooga right now. Not a lot is dry. Twall was a total bust yesterday (sport routes) and it's almost always dry.

Dayton roofs will be a disaster. They seep more than any other bouldering area (part of a larger cliff band...so seeping is pretty bad)...and under the roof will be a swamp.

You're better off driving elsewhere honestly. Today and tomorrow look like the best days for a while. Plus...this up and down of temperatures. Next week is back up in the 60s plus rain. Even if it dries up...condensation is going to be a huge problem.

Really? I was told the Dayton Pockets would stay 75% dry in my other thread. Though it will be after 4-5 days in a row of rain. The weather is starting to clear up next weekend, though so I have my fingers crossed. Thinking about adding about 15 hours of driving and going to Utah if its really going to be bad though.

After this much rain we are supposed to get. Even if the roof itself is dry...there will be crazy seeps coming down onto all the finishes and the base (where you put the pads) will be under water.

Start whitewater canoeing! ALF is going on next week. Gonna be bad ass open boaters from Canada to Germany coming to the SE

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
