TRAVEL CHANNEL SHOOT -- 9/17
|
The Travel Channel is shooting a segment for an upcoming show about America's National Parks in the Moab region on September 17, 2015, and is looking for anyone who might be rock climbing or canyoneering in the area that day and would be interested in appearing on camera for the show. We will be in the Wall Street/Potash Road area around 3-3:30PM and will be shooting for a few hours. |
|
I'll do it... but only if they explain, once and for all, how they get the ropes up there. |
|
Wondering what the Travel Channel pays for appearing on camera in a show about America's National Parks? |
|
There is no monetary compensation for this, we are operating on a very small budget and have a minimal crew of 3 people. However, it's a great chance to get on TV and talk about how awesome rock climbing in Moab is! |
|
No compensation? Wikipedia says that your channel is in 91 million homes. You can afford to take em out for dinner after the shoot at the very least. |

You're nothing but a chodehammer. I hope you fall off the cliff. |

I joined this this place months ago- not because I am a climber per se (yet) but because my 6 year old daughter has taken up rock climbing at our local Y. She has proven to be quite good I am told. My thought is to learn as much as possible about this sport to give her the most educated support I can (this is my climbing ignorance disclaimer) |

I am bothered by the wishes of him falling off a cliff and the sentiments that everyone ought to be compensated for something they all profess to love to do. Give him a break- he is asking the passionate few that would like the opportunity to A.) be on TV B.) talk about their passion for this sport. If it's not for you- move on. It's kind of disheartening to see so much of an attack mentality within a sport that seems to pride itself as laidback and open minded... perhaps that's my misguided mindset. Either way- yes- this IS my first post and no- I am NOT a troll. I'm sure I am going to stir up some more emotions with this post... carry on. Jamie. If his job is to con people into giving their time for free while HE makes money (or the organization he is representing is making money), then yea, I hope he falls off a cliff, and I'd say it right to his face with pleasure. As a former professional photographer, I've spent more time than you can imagine fighting just to get paid, and fighting this kind of BS. "Internship" is codeword for "work for free" these days. Writers and photographers especially are asked to work for free "because its digital, dude" not realizing that it costs AT LEAST $10,000 in hardware every 2-3 years to stay competitive. If he's so passionate about filming climbers, he'll find a way to compensate them for their time, beyond airtime. Whooooo wowwwwie, I get to be on the magic tv box??!?! Oh my gawd! Meanwhile, behind the curtains, Scripps, who owns 65% of the travel channel, is doing pretty well enough that they could pay for their content, or is the following not enough profit for you? "Net income rose 26% to $193.7 million, or $1.49 a share, from $153.8 million, or $1.07 per share, a year ago. Revenues rose 3.4% to $732.1 million. Ad revenue rose 1.2% to $502.9 million and affiliate fee revenue was up 8.7% to $215.2 million." broadcastingcable.com/news/… |

Its business, man. Imagine if I wanted a house built. Should I ask some carpenters to do it for free, just because they're passionate about carpentry? I'll give them credit, isnt that enough? And maybe get an electrician to wire it all up, I'll totally mention it on my blog. |

Jamie. These requests pop up regularly. Speaking only for myself, what I find bothersome is the lack of transparency. If it's a volunteer opportunity, just say so in the first posting, don't pretend it's a big professional opportunity for someone. If it's a shoestring budget, then I kind of doubt it's a Travel Channel production. More likely somebody just trying to get some video on TC. That's ok by me too, just say so and don't pretend to be something you aren't. I also suggest, for the sake of your daughter, that you not idealize climbers overmuch. |

Sounds like Sharp Entertainment (production co sub of Core Media group) already has a pretty established relationship with the Travel Channel |

I did not mean to ignite such a debate. However, I guess that's my mistake for being a "chodehammer". |

Just to clarify, is a chodehammer like a chode being used as a hammer? |

Andy McKeown wrote:That's so sick that you were a professional photographer, you and my 12 year old cousin have so much in common.Awesome! Was she published by the New York Times too?! cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com/… Sadly there was no pay in that. And they credited me wrong for the first 24 hours. And there were about a dozen factual errors in the story. Top notch stuff, the NYT. Was I being a jerk for hoping you fell from a cliff (hyperbole anyway)? Absolutely, well called. But to me, you're just as much of a jerk for asking for creative talent, with no pay, when you yourself are most likely trying to get paid, am I wrong? If this is a legit Travel Channel shoot, then dude, you KNOW people are making money.. why not those who are providing the goods? |
