Tore a muscle in my butt, I think. help?

was working a boulder problem with a buddy this weekend. Start was hands matched on a downward sloping rail with a heel hook at hands level on the same rail.

I started to pull up, and was pulling hard on the heel, back against the ground, and I heard an audible crunch/tear sound from my right butt cheek.

It's sore right in the fold where my butt cheek meets the back of my leg.

I am favoring it a little bit, but can walk and put pressure on it just fine. Probably stay away from heel hooks for the next month.

Anyone have this happen before? How did it heal/work out?

What's up Sam!?

Haha, you pulled your ass... I did it a few years ago doing the same kind of sit start. Slow stretching and lay off the heel hooks on that side, it should heal itself over a few weeks.

You still crankin hard? we're building a woody in Eric's garage. Been building a 4wheeler? (I sold the cruiser...)

As hard as I can. Good to hear from you. No new rig yet, too many other expensive hobbies

I did the same, only it was rocking onto a high right foot. Heard 2-3 crunches. Hurt pretty bad for about two weeks (sitting on a toilet was terrible) and gradually got better, and was non-existent after 2 months maybe? It was fine to climb on for the whole time, I just knew when I was in the wrong positions with it.

Good lord this title made me laugh and it was even better when I saw it was you. Which problem? At the bald?

I got a similar injury about two weeks ago. I was high stepping on an arete and trying to pull around to the other side. It hurt from my heel to my inner hip and my heel felt weak or unstable. It doesn't seem to be very severe as it seems to be healing quite well by being careful and stretch/massage. I can still heel hook in some positions. Seems like hip stiffness and weak hamstrings were a major factor.

Wouldn't it be tendinopathy only if it persisted because of inflammation. It seems like the author of that post developed it over time, whereas the OP is talking about a specific traumatic tear, which could very likely heal with no complications or extensions to recovery.

I have strained my hamstring heel hooking before. One time it would hurt whenever I sat in the car and it took a year before it quit hurting. Take it easy on the heel hooks until the pain is gone.

Did the same while climbing at the Red one year. Drove back to the west cost sitting with one cheek on a pillow. Took ~3-4 months to heal. No fun.

Man I just did the same thing about a month ago on Dime Crack at the Bald. Then last week I hammered the exact same spot on a hidden tree root while sledding on a piece of cardboard.

Needless to say it still hurts.

I've been stretching but not holding back on climbing much. Every now and then I will throw a heel hook that hurts and just stop working that move.

A PT buddy of mine just recommended a foam roller. I'm gonna try that. Good luck...
