Description

Thunder Point is the small buttress along the east stream bank as you head down the West Trail. It is just before the Oceanic Wall, and boasts two short routes: an 11d 8 bolt route and a 5.7 trad route. Both routes stay in the summer shade until noonish, and they share a bolted anchor from which you can rap.

L->R:

A. Sunset Arete, 11+, 1p, 70', bolts.
B. Center Tap Corner, 7, 1p, 50', gear.

Getting There

Head down the West Trail and look for a bolted arete on your left before you get to the Oceanic Wall. If you're at the Oceanic Wall, start heading up and out. If you walk more than two minutes, you've gone too far. Again, the bolted arete and "conspicuous dihedral" (Rossiter) are hard to miss.

Yes, it is very short. This is Not the reason to come to Dream Canyon; however, it is a nice line, it has easy pro, and it's a terrific pitch to do at the start or end of your day. It's ideal for beginning leaders, and I would certainly do it again.Scramble past trees and deadfall to the base of Thunder Point. Go up the right side to a big tree below a huge right-facing corner.You can anchor the belay at this tree, 20 feet before the crack, then climb up the rock/bush section to the ...[more]   Browse More Classics in CO
