There are theives atthe trail heads at Red Rocks. Our car was entered,(although locked, no sign of forced entry) and 1 credit card stolen from each wallet. In this way they could use the cards for days before we noticed. My cash was left, but my partner lost several large bills which he had tucked away. Bottom line, HIDE YOUR WALLET WELL!

"Out of sight, out of mind. It doesn't cost the thief anything, but time to break and enter. Keep valuables out of sight and locked up. Cellular telephones, climbing gear, purses.....all should Not be left visible inside your car, locked or otherwise. A fool and his/her money are soon parted.

what good pack doesn't have a nice secure pocket for your wallet??.or are we afraid of the climbers at base of crags going through our pack while up on lead? Seems simple to protect the cells and wallets by bringing along with you.

Vegas is a big city with big city crime. Red Rock is just 5 minutes from the edge of suburban Summerlin, and the fact that climbers are usually gone the whole day makes us an easy target. Be smart, a mild dose of paranoia in Las Vegas keeps you safe. Hide your wallet or bring it with you. Don't leave anything interesting looking in your vehicle.

That being said, sorry to hear about that...hope the rest of your stay was good.

A thought: I've seen people hold [successful] stake outs for much less than this.

Not odd at all. The thief was obviously thinking that he'd get to use the CCs for a while before the owners noticed they were gone. I never leave valuables in my car but if that happened to me I can see myself going at least a few hours before I noticed anything missing. Maybe days.

It's easy to break into a car w/o anyone noticing. In one afternoon I learned how to break into a car in three different ways and also learned how to cut off an alarm. It's actually pretty surprising that more cars aren't broken into at climbing areas. Perfect targets.

In Europe you see it all the time. Of course the unemployment rate for young people is over 50% in some places.

Not odd at all. It's right in the supertopo info.

" A common trick is to break into a car, find a wallet, remove a single credit card, then carefully lock the car back up. By the time you figure out that a card is missing, thousands of dollars of bills have been rung up at local casinos"

the reason is Vegas is full of down and out folks, the semi-smart ones have known about the pullouts on the loop for at least 20 years. It was 20 years ago my roomates rear window was pulled out without breaking glass all for a wallet that was not in the car. ripping of tourist climbers is nothing new there.
Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
