Description
The crux was sunbaked snow and ice that was soloed due to its inability to hold screws.
This route has a left and right variation and the former is probably the better of the two.
Location
Please refer to the South Toe River, Mount Mitchell, and Big Ivy Trail Map (Pisgah National Forest)
Ascend the Buncombe Horse Range Trail off of 1158. Walk for about 1/2 mile or so and then break right (west) onto hunter trails and the eventually into the Middle Creek drainage.
Once at the base of the crux either ascend or move right 1000 yards or so to the right variation (see Google Earth photo).
Descent: Once on top pick up the Black Mountain Crest Trail, head north, tag Cattail's summit, and descend the Colbert Ridge Trail to its trailhead on 1158. Leave a second car here or huff it back to the start.
