Description Suggest change

An under-developed backcountry crag with much route potential but only a handful of existing routes. The rock in this area is much like that at Windy Point but steeper and bigger. The complexity and nastiness of the approach has kept development to a null until the hard work of Kenton White developed an approach route under 3.5 hrs. The approach as given below takes about 2.5 hrs and is only moderately brushy. The classic route in the area is Coati Terraces (5.9, 350 ft.) but much solid unclimbed rock awaits development.

Getting There Suggest change

From the Palisades Trailhead hike 2.9 miles down the Palisades Trail to Mud Spring. From the spring hike approximately 200 yards , past two switchbacks, to a juniper tree with its stem cut off at head height. There is a small streambed that crosses the trail here (turn left into it). Follow the streambed for approximately 250 yards where it joins Pine Creek. Walk down the nice creek bed (many miniature dry falls and potholes) for approximately 200 yards where it levels out and is joined by a tributary streambed from the left and behind. Don't take this streambed but walk another ~30 yards to a smaller streambed coming from left and ahead. Two cairns may be found at the base of this brushy streambed. Bushwhack and scramble up the streambed negotiating a couple of dry falls and exiting the streambed at a rebar and chicken wire staircase near the top of the drainage. After gaining the top of the ridge and before the path gets completely choked with manzanita, look for a small cairn on the right cheek of "Bertha's Ass" after a hard to find right turn right. Follow cairns down the ridgeline negotiating a large pack of manzanita by joining a small streambed right before passing Kelly's Knuckle. To arches on the tops of rocks near the cliff's edge may be found near the top of Coati Terraces. The descent gully may be found approximately 150 yards further down ridge by following cairns.
