Description 

Directly south of the parking area The Pit is dry early in the year, long before the main wall and mushroom rock.
Wear shoes for the approach as you have to walk across a lot of loose basalt and can easily stub a toe or roll an ankle in less desirable footwear.

Beware of loose rock! Even some of the small (6-8ft) pillars are perched on unsolid bases and will move and potentially fall.

Getting There 

Follow the trail south west from the parking lot, keep an eye out for a left (west) branching trail up out of the draw.
