Description Suggest change

The Needle is a 200 foot tall formation just below Stump Buttress. There are three routes. A 5.7, a 5.8 and a 10+, all high in quality.

Getting There Suggest change

Follow the approach for Hole in the Wall. Walk [up] canyon and until the obvious, 300 foot cliff is apparent on the right (Stump Buttress). Start hiking up the talus field towards this formation. The Needle is hard to see from the valley floor, but once you're a little ways up the tauls field, it's quite obvious.... It's just below the Stump Buttress formation.

The alternate approach from Paxton Jones: follow the approach for Hole in the Wall. Walk up the canyon and until the trail disappears. You are now only about halfway to the 300 foot buttress on the right (Stump Buttress). Stay low while hiking up the canyon. Resist the urge to climb up the talusfield. Once you have crossed a few boulderfields, start looking up. The Needle is hard to see from the valley floor...you need to almost be directly underneath of it before it is obvious. Once you see it, and it is obvious, continue up the valley floor and walk about 50 yards past the Needle. Then hike straight up from there to the pine tree, and then angle back over to the base of the Needle. This approach is less steep and the talus rocks aren't nearly as loose. This will be the fastest way back down as well. The Needle is just below the Stump Buttress formation.
