Is it true? I'm scared to go but yet curious...

Yes, it's true. Head to Slo-Op.

100% true. Do not go there. Even if the lady wasn't crazy, it's not a good "gym" anyways.

That was some entertaining reading, although I feel badly for the people she mistreated. Makes you wonder how some of the people gave the place good reviews (the owner was probably out sick on those days).

The Crux is not a BBB-accredited business. Good thing - it would sully their already terrible reputation.

I drive by The Crux once in a while when I'm in town. The parking lot is always empty. No small wonder...

Wow! The Yelp reviews were terrible! She has more than 50 reviews calling her one of the most rude, disrespectful people on the planet. I want to go just out of sick morbid curiosity!

It's totally worth going to see just how unbelievably horrible she is. I went there when I first moved to town in 2000. She is super strict on safety and everything (which is fine in concept), but she takes it to this insane level. It really comes off as "you have to do it this way, no other way, because THIS IS THE ONLY SAFE WAY!". There's little comprehension of anything outside of what she was told. Then, of course, the auto belay got stuck at the top of the route and I couldn't get down. I politely hollered for assistance, and she just ignored me while I hung there. After 5 minutes of fussing with it, the device finally freed up and let me down. She's a real winner. Doesn't give a damn about the people coming in, just their money.

On the plus side, I ended up finding the real climbing community in town at SLO-Op (shameless plug). It's a good gym with lots of like minded climbers.

I remember going to grad school at Cal Poly , she had a poor reputation even back then . I am astounded she is still in business.

+1. If I'm ever in town, I'll stop by just to see if I can get a rise out of her. Then I'll head opver to SLO-OP for some real climbing.

It's true! First she comes up to our van and knocks. I was like, excuse me can I help you. That was when we were getting our gear to go climbing at her gym. She was like " well people like you sleep on my parking lot! So get out!" We said we came to give her our money and climb. She says: it's $22 each! So take it or leave it and you have to watch a 25 minute video. And you don't need any of your gear if you climb in my gym. Shoes too!" (Gross!) We decided to go in anyway to just at least look inside. We walked in and I asked what her name is , she refused to say. The empty gym just stood there, sterile. The lady ended up just kicking us out threatening to call cops for trespassing.
Yep. Don't go there.

I am going to put an offer on that gym. Hey, she is obviously miserable running it.

Wow, what a face that woman has, the frown lines are permanently etched into it even when she's resting.

So, there is a place on the planet that nobody would object to my dry tool technique with crampons and a bolt gun. Got it, awesome!

I'm kind of obsessed with this after stumbling on it last night.

How in the world does she manage to have soooo many of her bad reviews filtered out on Yelp?!?!@?! I was a general manager for a very popular chain of pizza restaurants, and let me tell you, when a customer waited too long on a friday night for their pie, the world knew about it on our Yelp account front row and center! Then started the process of me trying to track down the customer to apologize, give them free shit, and hope they revisited their review... We NEVER paid Yelp any money, even though they called us at least once or twice a week to "advertise" with them....
This certainly is what has to be going on here. 45 "filtered" one-star, clearly legitimate reviews?? Give me a break. Yelp is such a joke, I don't know how they enjoy such a good reputation.

But seriously, who wants to take a road trip just to mess with this lady? It sounds like an absolute blast, as long as we can get by the "attack" dog.

What's that restaurant in Chicago where the theme is that the staff is deliberately rude to you and people love it?

If the lady has mental issues, why do you want to "mess with her"? How about bum rolling? That is so much fun, especially when they screech and lurch about.

I was there yesterday and can say that this was with out a doubt the craziest FUCKING woman I have ever come across. It's a shame too because everyone in SLO is so nice to us.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
