Description Suggest change

Big Wall’s name is definitely accurate! Marked with a notable black streak that runs down the middle of the wall, this lofty section of sheer rock sits at the top of a talus field. There are also a couple massive boulders decorating the right side of the wall that form a sizable rock cave (with some routes even starting at the top of these giant boulders). And with no trees at the base, this area of Shelving Rock offers a wide, unimpeded view of the lake. However, the lack of shade and black rock also means climbing here can become unbearable by the afternoon during hotter days, so plan accordingly!

Big Wall offers a variety of challenging climbs between 5.9+ and 5.12, with the hardest of the routes forging a path straight through the black streak. Many of the routes (and their cruxes) involve clashing with short overhangs and ceilings, often requiring stiff undercling moves and over-the-lip reaches. The lines here are sometimes hard to read, and demand clever body positioning, which can make the problems feel harder than their grade. However, a thoughtful eye can soon discern the types of holds that are best (even when they are not obvious) and identify the sloped footholds that offer the best traction.

Getting There Suggest change

The Big Wall is located to the right of Neanderthal Cave and left of Jackass Buttress. Follow the main herd path to the wide walk up gully seperating Desert Sheild from Jackass Buttress. Head up to the cliff and follow the path left passing under the Jackass Buttress until reaching a few enormous boulders at the base of the cliff. This is the right end of the Big Wall.
