I will be in NZ (Christchurch) from April through June this year, and am looking to get some alpine hiking in. I will have limited gear with me (backpacking equipment but no climbing/mountaineering equipment). Can anyone familiar with the area speak to what will and won't be feasible?
For example, many of the routes listed in the Aurthur's Pass area on the NZ DoC site ( doc.govt.nz/parks-and-recre…) say "alpine experience and equipment essential." In fall, will you really need crampons and an ice axe for this stuff?
Thanks in advance! If anyone is in the area and wouldn't mind a fit but beginner climber tagging along, I will pay for the beer.
I did a 4 day track through there in march of 09! I can't remember which one but the route went up a wash and onto to a big plateau. Route finding and compass work was needed to get to the trail up and down plus scrambling skills but nothing real difficult. Not sure when the snow comes. 70 degrees in march it was rad!
