Heads up to all climbers in the area. My girlfriend and I were up in Bishop climbing this weekend. While climbing up at the Happies we heard gunshots which at first didn't alarm us with the shooting range not to far down the 395. As we began to hike back to our truck the shots seemed loud and close. As we began the descent of the trail where the road becomes visible we saw what looked like a black stratus or sebring type car parked on the side of Chalk Bluff directly in the center of the valley. At the car were two males who were shooting their guns directly up into the Happy area. I was furious and began counting the shots. From the time we were able to see the men to the time we drove off I counted 68 shots, and saw numerous reloads occur. Both men were seen shooting. I was going to drive up to them and talk things through/ discourage their behavior. The idea of approaching two armed men frightened my girlfriend. We decided to drive into town and alert authorities. I am unaware if they caught the individuals or if they were gone by the time the authorities made their way out there. I don't know if this is an isolated incident of bad drunk decisions on a holiday weekend or if this type of activity has been witnessed by others. The purpose of this post is to make other climbers aware in the area that this activity is occurring and is obviously dangerous and to try and figure out ways to discourage this behavior from happening.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
