trundlebum,It sounds like your stoked on both snowboarding and the new schredbetty. Good luck with both and remember that both are very dangerous as well as being a thrilling and very committing ride.I really haven't skied much since they opened the lifts to snowboards and still find time to go back to Colorado for spring schredding each year. There are allot of surf/sail folks that love to snowboard.Jerry Lopez for one. I am scheduled to travel to Colorado for climbing and snowboarding soon. I am some what concerned that I may not be far enough along with my rehab. Surfing and windsurfing have been OK with only minor limitations and technique adjustments. We sure have had some monumental conditions lately. Today we are in the rainy part of a dynamic Kona event.Friday we had light Konas and a north swell producing faces that were often over "forty feet?" REAL BIG! I don't know of anyone that went out. I was sitting on by buddy Treaver's deck having a beer and just watching these mountains hit the outside reef and peak up with 30'-40' right and left pealing sholders.Toss in the Kona offshore wind causing vast amounts of spray and you have a visual extravaganza equal to any.(Now this aint no bull)but there was also a full grown whale breaching completely out of the water just outside.Right before the biggest sets broke. The shore pound was splashing on the deck and it felt as if one of the rouges were to come through it could easily get in the house. The house is on a small cliff.
Yesterday the size had dropped some and the wind had bumped up and the sets had cleaned up as well.A few pro windsurfers went out and did OK.(they R payed 2 play U no)
Three days ago I got a call from my buddy Tom to surf at Norie's so I headed over to hook up with them but he and Greg were already paddling in having been worked real bad by one of the bigger sets and Tom broke his leash. I paddled out farther than I thought that I needed to and it was barely far enough when the next set came.I let the big sets go buy and then start trying to pick off some of the smaller yet still substantial residules. Also after the big one pass the texture of the water is so smooth. This worked great for about a half dozen fat right handers into the working channel. I did this for a good while. I would paddle way out side and wait when I saw the big sets on the horizon. My sesh ended when I mis calculated and went a bit to late on one. I didn't get clobbered but it resulted in a belly ride in over head white water that took me far in to the bay so I took the advantage and paddled in. I was getting lonely out there by myself anyway and it was a little spooky.
The day before that we wave sailed the same place with SUBSTANTIAL size and good 4.7m wind. For a while it was just my friend Frank and this kiter named Leham and me. I saw an image on the net of Leham that he took with a camera mounted on his kite(I was impressed!) Frank was pissed that the guy posted a secret area on the net and kiters aren't supposed to be at this place anyway according to some.
Well we got another 100 fin bag order and it's raining so I guess I'll go in the loft and get busy. We have more waves scheduled for next week.Aloha

I came very close to hitting a whale yesterday while wave sailing!

After he heard that I almost hit a whale the other day, my friend Jeff from NorCal said he was sniffed by a great white shark while surfing last week. Jeff spends more time than most in the ocean so I guess the laws of average are in affect. My response to that news was that he was blessed to have the encounter and nothing bad happened. IMO: given the choice I would choose to be shark food over a car wreck or any number of totally UN glamorous ways to enter the next dimension.

Sometimes things don't go as planned but eventually you're rewarded for being patient. This is how our 09 trip to Costa Rica started. Everything went smoothly at the airport and we departed on-time, whoo ho. Two hour into the flight and the captain announces that we are heading back to the airport due to a problem with the electrical generator. Well, any chance of getting into the water that evening had just been ended.

After landing, I quickly called my contacts in CR to let them know we were delayed 5 hours. We switched planes and were back on our way. Our 4.5 hour flight had turned into a 9 hour marathon! Luckily my daughter was able to entertain herself during the flight, and showed us that she might be able to handle the long flight to Bali soon.

Upon clearing customs we were greeted by our ground transportation and settled in for the five hour drive north to Nosara. It was 10 PM when we arrived at our destination and we immediately hit the bar for some cold Imperials. It had been one long day of travel!

I was up early the next morning, had breakfast with the family and some friends from CA, we had met there last year. They had informed us that a new swell was due to show on Thursday. I took a walk to the beach to scout out the waves and then went to look for a board to hire for the week. I eventually found a 6'8" fun shape that was similar to a board I use at home. Hiring a board has eliminated the ordeal of paying the airlines to destroy my boards.

So by late morning on Wednesday I was in the 80 degree water testing out my board. I was pleased with how the board performed in the chest high surf. That evening the surf had picked up with the incoming tide and was now overhead. I surfed until the sun fell behind the horizon. The predicted swell appeared to be showing.

At 5:30 AM Thursday morning I tried to quietly meander through our dark room but was more like a bull in a China shop. Sorry honey!
I quickly waxed up and walked to the beach. A quick head count indicated a dozen guys in the water and waves in the 6-8 foot range. I paddled out but my timing was poor, and took several bombs on the head. Welcome to Nosara, CR. I had rode 6 or 7 nice long rights and as the tide started draining, the size of the set waves were now pushing 10 feet. I was paddling out when I got caught inside by one of the larger sets of the morning. Another person slightly ahead and to my left decided to bail and pushed their board in front of me. I was ready to duck dive but dove to the bottom to avoid being hit by the other persons board. I got worked and caught the white water in from the next wave. Besides my arms were like jelly after 3.5 hours.

On Friday, the surf had dropped to 5-7 feet. By Saturday it was chest to head high, and was chest high on Sunday. I decided to take a rest day on Monday (4/6) due to my hurting back and arms. Every morning I was in the water before 6AM and surfed until 9:30 - 10:00AM. During the evenings I would take my daughter out and push her into the 2 foot reform. She rode many to the beach and from the grin on her face I knew she was stoked. When she was tired, I would paddle out and surf until the sun went down.

I had a fun afternoon on Tuesday 4/7 with chest to head high waves. I rode many lefts during this time. On Wednesday morning, a new swell arrived and I had my final rides in solid 6-7 foot waves. We departed later that morning for San Jose. As we drove, my sore arms and back told me that I had a successful trip. Pura Vida!

Fat Paul, great trip report dude! I hope that was you ripping the long board in the wave sequence you posted !
I'd like to ask a favor please. My buddy Buzzy Kerbox's son Koty is in a surf video contest and is in 2nd place at the moment.Would you sign up and vote for him. the contest deadline is in 5 days and Koty is 5 "stokes"(that's a vote) behind. It seems like a cool surf web site you might find your self visiting it periodically any way. It would be a big favor to Buzzy, Koty, and Me. BTW: his footage is the Best! Be sure that you press the STOKED button on Koty Kerbox. Thanks

Wish I could join you in The Gunks tomorrow. It's one of those places that has so much history and so many classics that I have wanted to experience! Thanks for stoking Koty! Rumor is that south swell is scheduled to arrive on Maui next week we will just have to wait and see.

Koty lost by 25 stokes. Thanks Fat Paul for checking it out and stoking Koty.
Well the wind shut down about two weeks ago but the waves didnít so we have had some glassy seshes with substantial size lately.
Frank Saab won the prestigious Kuau cup and we had a bitchen party on the beach to honor the sailor with the worst luck of the season. I remember the first half of the party vividly, but the latter part is very fuzzy!
We have two real close tiger shark encounters lately at my beach of choice. No contact, so, we are aware but still surfing every day. Since the word has been out itís been somewhat lonely at times on that section of reef. Truth is that we have probably been sharing space with that guy for some time now.
Prediction s is for more of the same for the projectable future. Wave sailing was great but we are surfers for a while and there is nothing more fun than that.IMO!

Got up this morning had coffee/ tea with Karen drove to the beach and paddled out at my favorite surf spot. Got a few "great big unís" and missed a lot of the waves that I paddled for on account that this place is notorious for sleeper sets so I sit a little outside and watch and move around with the peak. If I get a few of these babyís I can go on off to work and not feel jilted bout missing a few waves. I
I feel a bit guilty for leaving work after only 3 hours but we are in the very end of the north swells BUTT THERE WAS WIND AND WAVES SO I CALLED IN WELL! I went out and THOUROUGLY expressed my self for a couple of hourís wave sailing the same wave that I was paddling into this morning!

Olaf, it appears that surf gods are cooperating here as well. Waiting for the spring tide to drop and gathering up my gear. Chest high south swell and no wind! It won't last long. First day with sun and no rain for over a week. Im on it!

Hay there Fat Paul, I hope you got some great waves today. We have had some great surf conditions lately but we are in for a flat period I'm afraid. Work and home chores should fill the void till mid week when we are scheduled to get another bump. I'm keeping my fingers crossed about that.

Christian,If you say it's you then,IT'S YOU DUDE! Great shot! It is soo flat here at the moment and nothing of any significance forcasted. That could change but I'm not holding my breath. I am going climbing in Colorado in about a week. I'm so stoked!I'm depending on my bros to do the leading since my leg is untested in that arena but it will be great to get some air under my butt and pull on some holds.
