Access Issue: Private Property Details

Burney Limestone is technically on private property that is owned by Bear Gulch Quarry. There have been access concerns in the past between climbers and the landowners, although it has been many years. Please respect the area, keep a low profile, and leave it cleaner than you found it.

Description

This is the 30-35 meter limestone wall that is visible from Hwy 299. This wall hosts The Shredding's longest routes. It is a south aspect face and see's all day sun. It is best avoided in Redding's hot summer months, but on cooler days with an early start, you can squeeze in a route before seeking shade elsewhere. The best seasons are typically Autumn, Winter, or Spring.

Getting There

There are two options for accessing the Pachyderm Wall, AKA Sunshine Wall

1. If you are climbing at the Main Wall Area or Outer Wall, continue to follow the main upper trail to the east. You will encounter a tree with a chain and rappel ring. This is typically used as an approximately 40 meter rappel down to the base of The Pachyderm Wall, or as a safety to gain access to the 2 bolt anchors at the top of Hole in the Wall. The 2 bolt chain anchor is equipped with non locking shuts for a 35 meter top rope or double rope rappel of Hole in the Wall.

2. If approaching from below on Hwy 299, look for a pullout at the bottom of the cliff with a 35mph sign...this sign is for westbound traffic. Either park here or find safer, less narrow parking in a small parking area approximately 100 yards east of the sign, on the north side of the highway. As of Autumn 2014, the lower trail has been widened and cleared of poison oak, blackberry bushes and other nuisance vegetation....thank you so much to all involved in the effort! This trail is steep in one section and at times becomes slick with mud after a heavy rain. It has been equipped with a 10 meter section of fixed rope....GENIUS!
