I'll be down in the Cochise stronghold area from July 13-21. Any shady areas to climb at there or do all you Sierra Vista peeps head for the Catalina mountains in the summer. I'll be staying in Pearce most of the time so I was hoping I could climb at the Stronghold. If its too hot then the Catalina's will work too.

I've climbed Sheepshead in August, twice. It's not comfortable, but doable if you're dedicated and really want to do it. Bring LOTS of water.

Yea I guess if its in the AM it would still be in the shade. Maybe the westside is the call in the morning. The Eastside would have to cool off after it goes in the shade. You guys have any rain down there in that last few weeks?

You will sweat. Also that is the beginning of monsoon season, if it happens at all, so it is more humid and afternoon rain and lighting. I've been caught in those storms and it was no fun.

Ok thanks guys. I'll put it off until October when it is cooler. Summer can be a tough time to climb depending on were you want to go. Take care everyone down in So. Arizona and I'll see you all in 3 months.

I'm confused about why you were coming here to begin with. It's not ideal, but if you need to be here for some other reason, then you can definitely get some good climbing in. But no, this isn't the time of year to plan a trip for the sole purpose of climbing.

In other words, if you're gonna be here anyway, why not go climbing?

Sorry for being so vague Charles. I have my little 17' travel trailer down in Pearce kinda off
Middlemarch road I'm gonna bring back to San Diego. I have a little vacation place there and I left the trailer there while it was being built. I need to bring it back so we can go camping up in big bear, ca. We will be coming to Arizona no matter what so I wanted to at least try and get some climbing in. Cochise rock is soooo... Good! I love that area so much. just so pretty. Thanks so much for everyone's input. Another reason why Arizona climbers rock! I'm really looking forward to spending fall and winter climbing there.

No need to apologize, I was just curious :)

Since you need to come out here, AND you'll be doing the Cochise thing in the fall anyway, I would highly recommend putting a couple days in at the top of Mt. Lemmon at 8000+ feet. There's some great climbing there across a wide range of styles, grades, and lengths. Maybe you already know this.

And by the way, that's awesome that you have a spot to crash by the Stronghold!

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
