Heading to the red in a few weeks and trying to borrow a stick clip for the trip. Any recommendations for adequate length? Can I get by with one that is 8' (collapses down to 4' and fits easily in a car) or should I go with something longer. Not completely sure which crags I'll be at, but probably getting on routes in the low 5.12 range.

Edit: meant 8' not 8"

8" will definitely not be enough.

I used Trango's BetaStick there in the Spring (and lots of other places!) - If you are considering this then money is no object so spend the extra $5 and get the 'standard' model which extends to more than 11 - a full 12 feet and collapses to 33 inches.

+1 for the beta stick. Great bit of gear, saves so many headaches

Super clip, seriously, it's the most versatile stick clip tool made. This plus a $15 painters pole. gearexpress.com/superclip-s…

I had a 4-8' for a long time, have since gone to a 6-12'. Way better

If you're unable to nab a stick for the trip, there's typically a collection of old beater sticks at the pavilion by the parking lot of Muir Valley. We even managed to find one with a super clip attached...blew us away. Good karma meant we used it for the day and returned it when done.

So you could just buy a super clip and look for a beater stick/pole at Muir Valley. I strongly second Sam Stephen's suggestion of super clip. Best option out there.

Thanks for the recommendations! Checked out the superclip and it looks awesome, think I might pick one up and try to find a stick out there.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
