Hi all,

I am looking to get myself some static rope for top roping (anchors) and wanted to get some thoughts/opinions.

1. First off, I seem to have a lot more trouble finding any reviews and variety for static rope. Do people use other terms to refer to static rope?

2. I was looking at these two ropes:
www.sterlingrope.com/product/458878/P105/_/38%22_HTP
www.sterlingrope.com/product/458877/N095/_/38%22_SuperStatic>>>

I couldn't really tell if one of them were better than the other. Thoughts?

3. Also I have been told that 3/8" static really all you need these days. Is that true?

4. From your experience, what is the most (length wise) static rope you have ever needed? I realize this will very per location, I just want to see if there is a commonality.

5. Finally, is there a specific static rope you would recommend (links would be appreciated.)

Thank you all again. Everyone was very helpful for my last post.

I have the Super Static, and that is a BEEFY rope, you could drag it the crag and it would STILL be fine. I use it for top rope anchors, if there aren't any bolts.

Dude, the rope is prolly more than enough, seriously. I have one and like i said, it is BEEFY, you'll have nothing to worry about.

Hi Mitchy. Glad to hear it. Would you not use this with bolts? Too big for it?

1. No one does static rope review because no one use it enough to review it. I use static rope on big walls, Bluewater haul line is bomber.
2. Both are more than enough for what you are asking for. Go with the cheaper one.
3. Yes. It's more than enough. People jug up thinner lines.
4. 50 feet usually does the job. Unless you do a lot of top rope where anchors are all the way back from the cliff, then I would get 100'.
5. Just about any of them will do.

El Capitan reservoir from the top of ECM

I would go with 100 feet of the 3\8. When I was new I was able tie my rope to a rock and the other end to a tree. Then I would pursic down one end to make my master point over the edge. It worked fine and I felt safe making my top rope anchor.

A prusik supporting you over an edge sounds like a terrible idea. Sorry, but 5 millimeter cord doesn't cut it for holding my life while I work off the side of a cliff. Just use your dynamic rope as a tether to go over then set your master point. Pull up the now-equalized master point, clip the dyno from up top, and throw it over. Easy.

To the OP; 100 feet should be plenty. 9 mm is totally fine for a static line. As well, you wouldn't use it for bolts as there are much better ways to anchor to bolts than with a static line.

Good deal. We all know ropes lose half of its value as soon as it's out of the shop's door.

No man, for bolts we just slap a couple lockers, and top rope through those. When the the cliff is far from the trees i bring the static. WOW, just saw $88 bucks, that's a great deal.

So does anyone have any experience with this rope?
New England KM-III Light-Use Static Rope - 7/16" x 150' - 2012 Special Buy

I know New England is a great brand. But the "Light-Use" part is what I am curious about... I definitely am planning on using my static rope a lot for anchors.

My static Line is 50ft and I've never really needed anything more, If you want your master point to be over the edge to top rope there is no need to descend with a friction hitch you can either just tie a figure 8 on a bit and use a clove hitch on your second piece to adjust the length or you can set it up without the master point give yourself 5 feet of slack then pull the loop up and tie your knot. either way 50ft has been adequate for me.

Ignore the light use. It's way more than adequate for what you are doing. And if you are in NoVa, you'll likely be at Great Falls and Carderock. 50 feet will not be enough in many situations. Get 100 feet or hell, get the 150 feet and use that. Mine's 150 feet and I find use for it all the time around here.
