I am beginning to plan my summer climbing trip and have gotten pretty psyched on Spearfish Canyon. I have the guidebook but was wondering if anyone has any area-beta that I may need to know.
Also, I might be in need of a catch while I'm there. I'll gladly reciprocate! Right now I am capable of flashing 12a and have been working as many mid-range 12s as I can the past couple months. I expect to be comfortable with 12+/13- by the end of Spring.
Best time for SFC is late August into fall when the ticks are gone and the poison ivy has turned red so it is easier to spot.
The week of the Sturgis rally (early August, and the week before and after) can be annoying with the traffic and noise from the motorcycle cluster f%$#. Plus it is difficult to find a motel or campsite around this time period. This rally is rumored to be a big one since its the 75th anniversary.
Also, if this is your first time in the black hills then you need to go see sylvan lake and the needles highway in custer state park. Tons of good climbing in those areas (but more moderate).
Hey man I'm parking my camper in Spearfish this summer to climb all over the hills. I can show ya around, give you a catch etc when you're there. PM me and we can swap numbers or something and make it happen.
Get hold of me when you get to the hills and I can make sure you have a good visit. Plenty of shade to be found in the summer and the ivy seems to have been disappearing.
