Description

Also known as the Summit Pyramid of Avalon, this is the first area of the Third Tier you see when hiking up the approach trail. It's a smooth wall about 50' above the trail. It is home to 4 routes:

A. The Solution, 10, 1p, 80', 4 bolts & to 2" gear.
B. The Resistance, 11, 1p, 80', 4 bolts & to 2" gear.
C. Black Tiger, 11, 1p, 100', 3 bolts & gear to 1.5".
D. Jaguar, 11, 1p, 70', 7 bolts & small to medium gear.

Getting There

Take the trail up around the right side of the Wall of the Dead on the Second Tier. Shortly after the trail cuts back left, you will be below the smooth face of the Southwest Buttress.

Begin with a finger and hand crack, then pull up and left to a stance beneath the first bolt, which is shared with The Solution. From the first bolt climb up and slightly right over ever more resistant terrain (and 3 more bolts). The crux is in passing the last two bolts. The solution holes vanish, though more holes are visible just above to lend encouragement. When the angle eases, climb to a 2-ring anchor on the slab. Lower off 80 feet. A new trail leads to the bottom of the buttress and goes up along the south side to the top of the Southwest Buttress, though there is little need to hike this trail now that proper anchors have been installed for each route. From the point where the new trail meets the bottom of the buttress, scramble left and up maybe 25 feet to the beautiful Ledge With 3 Trees. All the routes but Jaguar begin from this ledge. Jaguar begins from the point where the new trail meets the bottom of the buttress.
