It's about 8-9 pairs of blown shoes I thought he could resole and sell. I think that's how he makes money.

I've also got a handful of ropes I was going to drop in the rope recycling bin at the gym, but he's rappelling whole cliff right now (??!...whatever) and could probably use them.

That really depends on his mood.

If you came up to him with a bag of ropes and old shoes for nothing, he'd be pretty damn accessible I'd think.
