It's that time of year again - San Diego Mountain Rescue is looking for experienced backpackers/mountaineers who are 18 or older to join our team of professional search and rescue volunteers. Come in with basic backpacking and mountaineering skills and we'll teach you everything else you need to be an effective rescue member. You'll be expected to attend a reasonable percentage of field trainings (one weekend a month), as well as a couple of Wednesday evening classroom trainings and team meetings per month at the Mission Trails Visitor's center. Within a few months, you can be field qualified and be on-call to attend search and rescue operations when we're called out.

The team was founded 41 years ago and currently works under an agreement with the San Diego County Sheriff's Dept. We average around 30 operations per year, ranging from urban searches for at-risk missing persons to type-1 alpine searches at high altitudes and in bad weather.

Joining the team is a big financial and time committment. You'll be expected to purchase any necessary gear you don't already own and acquire a medical certification. Though we carpool whenever possible high fuel prices are also greatly increasing the cost of participating with the team.

If you're interested and want to learn more, please come to our recruitment meeting on September 10th, 7pm at the Mission Trails Visitor's Center.
