BETA PHOTO: Some careless campers ruined south ridge arete wit...

One of the best bouldering areas in Idyllwild. Most boulders range from 10-30 feet in height and are typically face or slab climbs, with a few exceptions. The rock is high quality granite, similar to that found at Suicide Rock.

Getting There

Drive up South Ridge Road, located off of Tahquitz View Road in Idyllwild. Parts of the road can be rough or impassable for low clearance, 2wd vehicles until the road is graded. If your vehicle cannot make it all the way up, park in one of the many turnoffs and walk the rest of the way up. You know you're there when you see a large, slabby boulder in a parking area.

High Face (V2)

The 30 Foot Slab V2+ 5+ CA : San Jacinto Mountains : ... : Cat Boulder
This problem ascends the large face on the West/Northwest side of the boulder. There is a shallow arching crack moving up and left across the face about 18 feet off the ground. The start involves very tenuous smearing and crimping/slapping. After about 12 feet you reach some decent holds and move right to top out. The psychological crux is the very last move. It's not too hard, but you're a long ways up!...[more]   Browse More Classics in CA

Everyone keeps talking about so cal bouldering guide, but it does not have much info on route description. Is there another source?

I haven't found any other sources for information on this area. IMO, Craig Fry's guide is poor and dated.

I guess if you want a paint by numbers approach... but I still don't see a whole lot of "original" material on this page.

Some group of campers had a MASSIVE fire right under south ridge arete, the whole side of the boulder is black, and the heat made a huge flake pop out a bit and is really hollow, then the top of the flake was broken off making a massive ugly hold. That whole flake would pop if you tugged on it a bit and the first really good foot edge is apart of this flake. The problem is pretty much ruined...
