I bought a chalkbag in 1989 because people suggested I needed one, but I never really used it for chalk-

I used it for heat packs in it the winter, and water ballons in it that spring for people who insisted on shouting beta at me. (Chuckle) I can practically still hear my belayer warning people "Uh, I think he's serious, he doesn't want your beta." "No, really, I think you should leave him alone..."

Kaplooosh!!! You don't have to hit someone directly from 60' up to get them wet. And that is what chalk-bags are good for, at least when you are 18 years old.

I lost my chalkbag on a spring break trip to NRG in 1991 or 1992 and never did replace it. I do admit to wishing for it on polished granite in Singapore & on polished lime in Malaysia though.

Does anyone else just use their chalk bags to warm their hands in the winter? I always mean to use those hand warmers in there, but just ended up shaking around the fleece to try and heat up the tips.

From the book "John Gill: Master of Rock" by Pat Ament:

"In 1967, I was a gymnast at the University of Colorado. I was the only other person using chalk in climbing. Chalk bags did not exist yet, and I placed a small block of it in a pocket or sometimes held the block in my mouth so that my fingertips could find it quickly."

So that's another way to do it.

Agree that gymnasts were the first to know chalk was something useful on slick polished quartzite of Devils Lake, Wisconsin. John Gill did his boulder problems there in the mid 60's so there's the answer we all were waiting for.

If I use my bag at all, I usually fill it with the indigenous dirt or dust, I realize this probably wouldn't work very well in some of the wetter climes where the indigenous soil is basically loam and rotting vegetation.

I do like throwing a pinch of someone else's chalk over my shoulder then spitting on my hands though.

Someone who doesn't use chalk is a time-warped 1970's SLC climber (chalk would get you at least verbal abuse, maybe tires deflated).
My chalk bag is better than a stuffsack loaded w/ chalk (back in the day...).
If chalk bags did not exist I'd use rosin again.

Michael, I've used heatpacks in the chalkbag for cold, prefer fingerless mitts (both are good, but I only got that organized once...).
