Many climbers on this forum, like me, are also skiers so I feel compelled to alert the community of this new and potentially dangerous product. It's an avalanche beacon WITHOUT A SEARCH FUNCTION!!
At first this company marketed it as a "mountain safety device for lazy/untrained backcountry skiers," but after a firestorm of criticism, they have scrubbed their website and now proclaim that it is actually an in-bounds only avalanche safety device. BULL!
Statistically, people DO NOT die in avalanches while "skiing with their families in-bounds" at ski resorts on patrolled and controlled terrain. They just don't.
I feel that if this product falls into the wrong hands (ie; rich tourist kids that get them for Christmas from well intentioned but ill-informed parents) they will lead to a sharp increase in avalanche related deaths due to a false sense of security.
This also reinforces the illusion that they themselves will be saved wearing one. And the worst part is it sends the message that being prepared to save others is not important! IT IS ESSENTIAL!!
Please pass the word...

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
