Sizing Softshell jackets

Hey all,

So after tons of deliberation, I finally purchased the Marmot ROM. I am very pleased with the jacket itself, but am finding that the sizing may be a bit wonky. I first tried on a small (grey in the photo album linked below). It was tight in the chest, waist, and elbows when I put on more than one layer. Also, I noted that when I lifted my arms up, it exposed my belly (which I find less than ideal). So, I decided to return that one and size up to the medium (green in the photos). However, now that I am trying on the medium, it seems a tad loose and baggy. Is this level of bagginess a big deal and should I find something a bit more close fitting, or am I just picking nits at this point.

Here's the link to the album: An album cover

Thanks,

PS. I will be using it for climbing and mountaineering during the late fall, winter, and early spring (in the case that impacts anything).

I have used the ROM for 2 or 3 seasons now for ice and like it. One thing that you didn't mention as far as fit was if your hood fits over your helmet. I tried on a small and couldn't put the hood up over my helmet without it putting pressure on my neck and being too tight. The medium was snug but with enough room. If your deciding between sizes that might help you make a decision. As far as the loose fit I do find that the shell does bunch up a bit and at times it can make looking at my screws on my harness a bit more challenging. However, for what it's worth if you put a spare pair of gloves on the inside of your coat for belays, etc., I have noticed it takes out the bagginess and it climbs/wears fine.

Don't know if you saw this thread I started a while back, but it's got a bunch of different opinions on some of the marmot softshells. I sent back the ROM as like you said the fit was off and the side panels were too big. I kept the tempo and the uptrack and have been really happy with the overall fit.

Like shoes, if it doesn't fit it doesn't fit.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
