Access Issue: Access issue - Monastery, Cedar Park, Combat Rock, etc. - open since 2023 Details

Update: per Bruce Hildenbrand: the area has been open since 2023.

Per JF M: as of May 2022, there is no signage on-site, nor information on the USFS webpage for the Cameron Peak Fire (nor on their published map of closures) that indicates the area is closed.

Per Bruce Hildenbrand: it appears that the Forest Service has closed access to all the climbing areas accessed via Storm Mountain Road (Monastery, Cedar Park, Combat Rock, etc.) until they can clear all the dangerous dead trees from the Cameron Peak fire.

I worked this issue with Eric Murdock at the AF, and it looks like the Forest Service picked Devil's Gulch Road as the southern boundary even though all the climbing areas on MP.com were not burned.

Description

This is a reorganization effort to help clarify routes in this area.

This may have a real name other than listed above. If you know it, we can edit it.

There are 2 tiers to the climbs here.

Per JF M: the TR anchors are large hardware store bolts of some sort with pipe around them (pictures will be posted).

Getting There

This is 1.0 miles west of the Beige Siphon Tube. Walk 50 feet north up the road to the curve sign.

Per JF M: park near the curve sign in a large-ish, now paved pulloff. Scramble up the "trail" at the upcanyon end of the lot (really, it's more of a dry runnel strewn with unstable tiles of rock). Hop, Skip, and a Jump is immediately at the top of the loose ascent.

Trend climber's left up and across an angled shelf (over the same flat, loose rock) to Disney Chimney; the road-side top-rope routes can be set by staying low via this approach; however, at last inspection, the "anchors" were a few pieces of pipe hammered into the ground (i.e., no hangers, etc.; loose rock abounds). Proceed further left and go around the corner to find Paradigm Shift.
