Hey California folks! I'm wondering what conditions in the High Sierra are like right now, and an educated guess as to what they might be come late April. I know it's been a dry year (or two...) in Cali, but what's that mean for the Sierra? Is the snow worth skiing? Is there so little snow that some of the alpine rock routes around Whitney and the Palisades come in a month or two before normal? Or are conditions in that crappy middle ground where the snow sucks, but everything is still too wet and cold to climb?
OK, I'll venture a guess. East-facing rock routes will be doable in April, provided we don't get storms within a week or two of your arrival. Expect snow on ledges and in shaded locations. Expect snow on the approaches and descents. Don't know about the skiing, but dress warmly for the High Sierra in April, even on the east-facing routes.
