Should mountain project have a "like" button? I think it should!

I suspect the question is "Would mountain project be sued by F-book if it did?". The world is full of useless ambulance chasers.

I think a dislike option would stop runaway off topic threads where people feel they have to respond instead of a simple thumbs down.

I dont "like" that idea

if anybody follows pinkbike though, you are aware of a ratings system on comments. Basically if a comment gets too many bad ratings from registered users it is no longer displayed unless you choose to see it. That could be kind of a nice function

Definitely not anything connected with Facebook. I hate those buggars and the way they have made it so you can't make a comment on a news item unless you sign up.

I'm for the dislike button, If the thread is alive then its obvious people like it, but what if after 10 dislikes the thread was removed?

A Facebook style "Like" button wouldn't be ideal.

What would be nice, potentially, is the simple "Thumbs up" and "Thumbs down" rating feature, similar to what Climbingnarc has in his comments sections.

I like the idea. That way it can give more weight to replies/advice that are helpful and generally approved by the community.

For the forums we have a 'dislike' button (flag) if it is totally inappropriate. For the pages and photo contributions (what this site is for) we have a thumbs up for useful/good pages and photos.

Good enough for me.

Comment rating systems encourage groupthink.

I am a member of a number of forums that have "rating" systems, and every forum is in the shiter. One forum you be familiar with is rockclimbing.com. They have a star rating system and it is completely worthless. The admin added it in hopes that people would rate the accuracy and quality of the advice given in a specific thread, precisely as you mentioned. But, that never happens, it is more of a rate as to how much someone likes or dislikes a specific user or topic or how witty a one line trolling reply is. I have seen the same thing on five other forums. No one uses the rating system to actually rate the quality of the advice, it is always about getting back at someone or some useless crap like that. I guess some users think if they go around and dislike posts, that is going to piss off the OP and thereby make that user happy or something, I dont know, I just categorize that stuff as teen nerd rage, minus the teen part. I also happened to notice rc.com went from about 500 regularly posting members before the rating system to about 50 now - interesting.

Even if people did use it based on the quality of the advice, it's not a guarantee that MP would be collectively correct.

you spent time on rc.com? why?

I do agree with 20kn though, leave it the way it is. Hopefully this site continues on without relying on this mostly pathetic forum.

Well that explains what's been happening to MP the past couple of years. They all left RC to come here.

So you joined MP yesterday and now you want it to turn into Facebook? Dislike.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
