Description
Guarded by a relatively long approach by Tahoe standards, Shirley Canyon hosts some of the most impressive single-pitch granite walls in the region. Routes are generally long (100' +) on high-quality, although largely untrafficked rock. The walls face east and are in the shade from noon until dusk. Given the aspect and elevation, late summer and fall are the best times to climb here.
Getting There
Follow the Shirley Canyon trail for about 45 minutes until the trail heads up an expansive granite slab - the walls should be very apparent at this point. Continue up the slab for about 100 yards, keeping your eye out for a small, 3rd-class gully splitting the cliffband to your left. Cut over to the gully from the slabs, traversing along the base of the cliffband. Once at the top of the gully, a faint trail traverses along the base, cutting uphill at the right side of the Center Wall. Total approach time is about an hour.
