Shelf Road Yurt

We bought the land above Cactus Cliff and are considering placing a Yurt there. The land has a well but nothing else. If we decide to go for it, and we probably will, I'll be begging for help. Anyone out there want to put in a (few) good day's labor in exchange for future lodging?

Keep me posted. I helped build the yurt at Barr Camp (10,500') a few years back. I have some spare time this spring/summer, and might find some time to help. Not a big Shelf Road fan, but occasionally go down there with friends that prefer clipping bolts.

Keep me posted Kirk! My days off are Tuesday and Wednesday, so if you need help mid week I'm your guy.

  • Edit to note that I have a fair amount of experience in building construction. While I haven't done a yurt I have been involved in constructing several stick built structures including my family's cabin in Maine.

I have June, July, and the first half of August to work up there. With a remote site like this, I'm not sure where to start... solar water pump, water tower, toilet, shower, hot tub, climbing wall, deck...

First you start with a keg o' beer.

I think I'd pass on the climbing wall if its right above shelf road!
Also I'd be down to help, I can do weekends. Have construction experience and am an engineer.

You should build it out of sandbags

then you could call it your dirtbag house

Kirk,
I would be interested....and I have tools.

How about a straw bale timber frame? There is lot's of lumber to be sourced these days on the Front Range. I bet you could source the hay from someone in the valley.

A Yurt would be cool too....just might be a bit more expensive..Anyways keep me in the loop.

Kirk,

I too would be more than happy to be a pair of arms to help move things around. I don't have as many days off as some others, but I have weekends free.

We haven't settled on anything but we like the idea of the minimal impact, nomadic approach.

Your responses give me hope we might actually get this show on the road! Thank you to one and all for your kind offers of assistance.

Tyson, we'll definitely call it the dirtbag house whenever you visit.

Time to post up...
The dream is alive!
We've achieved a Shelf Road first, first hot tub or FHT. It was pretty amazing to soak in 104º water after a hard day.
The Yurt foundation is about done. Lumber and materials to build a round deck are coming in a week from Thursday. The Yurt will be delivered to our storage in Cañon City later this week.
We're thinking, weather permitting, build the deck third week of June and get the Yurt done by end of June (If we get a wind free spell!)
So...
Anyone still want to help?

Thanks for the speedy bump Erick!
We'll most likely be up there Wednesday to finish work on the foundation and get in some climbing. We are hoping to receive the Yurt, shipped from Montrose, on Thursday. We could use some help collecting stone for the foundation and may need help unloading and storing the Yurt.

Anyone want to visit, check out our progress, help, say hello, drink a beer... We're located above Cactus and The Gym in the big meadow off the road. Walk the road up from Cactus and c'mon over.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
