Share Camping at the City of Rocks, Mem Day Wknd?/Info on BLM Camping?

I had a lapse in memory and forgot camping at the City is reservable. I'm going out this weekend and since its a holiday, all spots are reserved. Does anyone have a spot reserved with room for 1 more tent who would like to split the cost with two rad women and 1 awesome/chill dog for Friday - Monday (i would be happy to provide/share beer too!)?

And/or, does anyone know the status of camping north of the City on FS Land or south on BLM land? I have heard conflicting info on access to these areas and dont want to mess with climber/management relationships by treading where we are not welcome. Also, having not camped in these areas before, I'm not sure exactly how to access them? Any info would be great!

Thank you!

If you drive west past the city and the reservable campsites you will get into BLM area and if you go far enough the Sawtooth Forrest. There are a lot of fist come first serve that way and some even have pit toilets. In daylight its not hard to find but I wouldn't be looking in the dark. One place I like to go is a few miles past, dirt road on the right that climbs a sparsly treed ridge to a popular place for people to camp, haul their RVs etc... and there are pit toilets up there.

Thanks, rging, for the info! This is all super helpful. Sounds like these are all on the Oakley side, so I think we'll head in from there and get a site in the daytime as you suggested.

Thanks again!

Did you find a spot and get some good climbing in? It was a little cooler than I expected and I imagine Sunday night the wind was kicking up in the BLM section. Made me happy my spot was heavily treed and a bit lower in altitude.

Hey there! Yes, we had a great weekend of climbing, and found a sweet BLM spot to camp near Smokey Mtn Campground. The wind wasnt too bad - we were pretty protected as well, and there isnt too much cold/wind that a big puffy jacket and a cup of cocoa cant take care of. Thanks again for the help! Hope you had a fun weekend as well!
