Seeking out FAs of Layton Kor

I'm wondering if the MP route guide can effectively and efficiently find routes by FA. After climbing a few of Kor's routes, I've decided I'd like to find more. I suppose there may be a dedicated website with this info, just haven't looked for one yet.

You can probably get some good ones from here too, and Climb!

Thanks Scott! Apparently he's more famous and influential that I thought. I just liked the routes I've climbed that he did the FA on and want to do more of them.

mildly pioneering in the sport of climbing, to say the least.........

Maybe the AAC library would be helpful. I look for his routes too, look through Ca., Utah, Wyoming and Colorado guide books. I have done 2 I can think of- Castleton tower and Crescent arch- with Fred B, in Tuolumne.

If you're in the area you might want to stop by The American Alpine Club at
710 10th St. - Suite 100 in Golden to check out the library in person.

Searching just his name on the route guide brought up a couple pages. I guess he spent a lot of time in Eldo.

I didn't even know there was an AAC library in Golden. But now I'm going to have to go see.

I started seeking out Layton's less traveled routes years ago. Felt he was more artistic about his selection than many of his contemporaries. The Cooper-Kor (5.10 V) route on Pigeon Spire in the Bugs is one of my more obscure favorites, so is the Kor Fuller route (5.10dR III) on Mount Louis. There are some hidden gems out there that don't get climbed much. Enjoy your search.

I think I clipped one of his old pitons and placed one piece of gear on this run out traverse.

Dow, I feel the same way about the few routes I've done. I climbed The Owl in Boulder Canyon on The Dome last weekend and it reminded me enough of The Yellow Spur that I looked at the FAs. I decided I liked his style and should find more of his routes.

Mathias,

I'm thinking you would never make it as a climber without MP.

Well lucky for me it's here then, huh?

There were enough similarities to me (albeit mostly psychological) that I checked who the FAs were.

But wandering routes under overhangs, with some moves that felt more muscle than grace. Maybe that helps explain my feeling.

after roping up on the Southeast corner of the Second Flatiron in my early days of climbing, I kept returning to solo the route, in true Kor style. Backed off everytime.

Yeah, I found that route on the second flatiron and added it my my todo list (have to check on the raptor nesting). I'm guessing it's pretty intimidating to do solo?

And after finding The Hook (somewhere in Northern Utah) our roadtrip next week is taking a big detour. I wouldn't have bothered going that direction otherwise.

The Finger of Fate is a Kor FA also including many traverses and some overhangs.

Mathias,
In addition to checking out more of Kor's routes, you may want to get your hands on a copy of the book Camp 4 by Steve Roper. It's a very entertaining history of some of rock climbing's tough-as-nails pioneers, and includes some details about Layton Kor and his first ascents.

I'm sure there are other great reads out there about Kor that other folks might suggest.

Eric, I saw The Finger of Fate but I think it's currently beyond my confidence level.

C Runyan, I'll look for that book. I've avoided getting wrapped up in the doings of famous climbers until now, but the pioneers just impress the hell out of me.

Here's the other book I mentioned. If you can find a first edition as well it's great as well since the current one was amended to included the "new" climbs of the 80's.
