I'm looking at coming out to City of Rocks and possibly Black Cliffs the 1st week of May. Any info on raptor closures for these areas? Any other area beta would also be appreciated.

There's a portion of the flaming rock trail that's closed, along with the east face of flaming rock to puzzle wall. That's the only closure I know of and is only a very small portion of the park so it shouldn't be much of a problem. Enjoy!

Black Cliffs has several raptor closures so far this season. If I remember correctly the Boise Climbers Alliance facebook page lists everything. Also there should be closure signs around the particular areas, but most of the main climbing spots are good to go (short cliffs, mid cliffs, tall cliffs, most of car body...)

Thanks for the info. I was told that if we're heading to City of Rocks and Castle Rocks that we should just stay out there. Any input as to if a special trip to Black Cliffs is needed? I was told that the rock quality is marginal at Black Cliffs and to just stay at City of Rocks and Castle Rocks for the week...

Black cliffs is the Boise convenience crag, it's really not a destination.
Not bad, but I wouldn't cut a city of rocks trip short for it.
If you want to hit quality basalt, Paradise Forks is much, MUCH closer to your home.

Thanks Brian... Thats pretty much what we were told. Looks like a week of granite...

If you somehow get sick of granite and are really set on basalt, Massacre Rocks is closer to the City than Black Cliffs are, and much better quality.

The black cliffs climbing pages all list seasonal raptor nesting but isn’t raptor nesting season done?

Correct, nesting is done and there are no raptor closures at the Black Cliffs (that I know of) right now. Do you see anything on MP that say there is a closure? If so, that is probably a mistake.

I just checked one of the pages and see this message: "Access Issue: Seasonal raptor closures. All areas currently open." The "Access Issue" text will remain visible, even if there are no actual closures at the moment.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
