The Joshua Tree National Park Superintendent's Compendium states that:
1. Vegetation is not allowed to be used as an anchor.
2. Only neutral or rock colored bolt hangers are allowed.

Description
Scary Rock guards the upper entrance to The Asylum and has a small number of routes on it's north and west faces. Just north (left) of this is Keith's Wall and directly across is the southern end of Split Personality Rock. Notable routes here include Thorazine Shuffle Left (5.11b) and Thorazine Shuffle Right (5.12a).
Getting There
The best approach is to pass Conrad Rock and head for a This is the rocky notch used on the upper approach to The Asylum, Joshua Tree NP where the top of Scary Rock will be visible. The approach takes 15-20 minutes from the closest parking area.
