Cool cross-through beta after starting matched low in the undercling flake. 11/25/11 Photo: Garrett M.

I'm planning a trip to Sawmill in mid August and was wondering if there were additional resources out there available on the bouldering (ie anything printed in a guidebook?). MP provides a good description of the problems but doesn't really elaborate on the locations. I'm assuming they're all clustered around each other? Any extra beta, tips, comments, and or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Skyler, it's awesome! Nic Oklobzija is working on a guide, but I'm not sure when it's coming out. So MP is your best guide for now.
The Superior trail will bring you right up to the dome and the boulders are on the other side. The climbers trail brings you right up to the picnic boulders, and the Jaws boulder is the first thing you will see. Everything is close by and easy to find. Make sure you skin is thick and your in good bouldering shape because the rock is super coarse and the average grade is V7/8. Good luck and have fun!

Thanks Remo! I was asking some other people about the conditions in August. I know it will be warm but how are the bugs/ticks? How where the conditions when you were there? Didn't you go in the summertime?

There is a current bouldering guidebook out by a local climber named Peter Doge. It's for sale at the VE here in Duluth. I'm sorry I can't remember the name but the guide is very extensive and covers Duluth and the North Shore.

Zane and me

I just stopped at Sawmill last week to check it out on the way to the Boundary Waters. The mosquitoes were horrendous!

Thanks for the info everyone. I was curious about recommendations for camping. Do most people camp near the boulders if staying for a few days or I've also heard there is a single campsite atop the dome.
What do you recommend?

skyler,
you have a few camping options. you can dirtbag it at the parking lot. you can head back east on country road 6, south a mile or so on 61, then west 3 miles on highway 1 to the finland state forest campground. there is also, obviosuly, camping at tettegouche state park, but that stuff is expensive and requires a reservation.

camping aside, there are numerous hotels and bed and breakfast spots along 61. my favorite spot is cobblestone cabins. super chill and cheap. cobblestonecabins.biz/
