Hey Jeff, The Sandbox Traverse is pretty big and its not likely that you walked right by it, even in the dark. I know Mr Andersons books says 15 minutes, but I'd say 15 minutes at least, IF you know where your going.
So, park on Mulholland where its crosses the creek the first time, just like the book says. Drop down into the creek and head downstream. Forget about the 15 minutes part, just keep walking until the creekbed narrows up and blocks of white/grey sandstone start pushing out of the sides. You have arrived. Right where the Sandbox wall is(on your left if headed downstream), the creek turns sharply to the west(your right). The wall itself is pretty clean, but you may need to do some landscaping around the base of wall.
For what its worth, The Sandbox is not really a destination, but rather, something cool to check out if your camped at Leo, kind of like Mugu Rock or Dume in that way. Heck, the approach might even be shorter from the back of the campground. Ive never tried it that way, but folks from the campground have walked up on me and my kids while climbing there so it cant be that far.
At any rate, give it another go and if you still cant find it, send me a note.
