Safety of the Potrero?

Looking for opinions on the safety of heading to the Potrero at some point this winter. I've been before, but am not sure how safe it will be getting to/from Hidalgo from Monterrey. And, I'm thinking of dirtbagging it by bussing down from San Antonio - any thoughts?

hidalgo to monterrey no problema hombre

heard rumor of someone getting carjacked on the tollway from laredo to monterrey, but really it's the huge hassle of getting back into the usa in a timely fashion that is the rub when traveling by land. Fly if you can.

Just returned from a great week at EPC. Had no issues. We flew - which is most likely safer than driving. More info on a Supertopo post recently.

You will have no problems, everything here is tranquilo. Come on down and join the fun.

Bus from San Antonio to Monterrey about $40?, bus from Monterry to Hidalgo $2, cab from bus station to climbing $6, or walk and hitchhike up the hill, about 3 miles.

I'd like to go in spring (and have been before) - how safe (or unsafe) would it be for two women to drive there? We're on a longer road trip, starting near Moab and going to cochise along the way, so flying isn't practical - we'd have to ditch our van somewhere.
I drove last time, and speak Spanish -- only worried 'cause I've heard about the shootings in Mexico.

Women have been arriving safely by car both in pairs and singly. Just make sure to travel by day and stay on the toll roads.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
