BETA PHOTO: Roybal's Wall - leaning back while the ground slop...

Since Upper Fat City drainage used to be known as Embudo Canyon & was the site of nearly all early bouldering in the area (because in the early to mid 70s you could drive all the way up to the dam at the constriction of the canyon), it seems a shame not to include some of the classic early problems. Roybal's Wall is a short problem on the right (south) side of the canyon a couple hundred yards up from the dam. Rating is approximate - there was no formal boulder rating system back then, everything was either: can do or can't do. Roybal's was easier before Thad Meyerriecks pulled off a key hold at the top (& promptly paid for his sin).

Hey "Doc",,, Roybal's Wall was done by no less than Mike Roybal in the early '70-s and Yes a few of us managed to get up it. In particular were the brothers Peter and David Espinosa... of whom their mother was a teacher at Eldorado High School of which I was in the "1st graduating class" of 1972. She was one of my teachers and she was a sweet lady and one of my favorite teachers :o)
Those brothers were some of the best boulderers anywhere,,, but they rarely did any "climbs"; Kinda like John Gill if you remember him.
I finally got up "Roybal's Wall" and have probably done it six or seven times way back when.
At that time period, we also did a boulder problem called Amputation which was first done by Rick Meleski and Davito Hammock. I'm happy to say,,, I still have ten fingers!!!
If you go to the original Mike Hill guide book to the Sandias you can see a pic of Rico doing a boulder problem in Embudo Canyon taken by our friend Joe Cabaza. Page 116 .
