Rogers Rock-Lake George

My non climbing girlfriend and I are going to spend a few days around Lake George. Is rogers rock campground still open, I heard (from an unreliable source) a few years ago that it was closed. The only thing I can find online is dated from years ago.

Also, any suggestions on lakeside camping in the area? I usually camp around keene when I head down there without her, but seeing as we wont be climbing much (and she would like to be near the water) figured Lake george was a better option.

Thanks!

As far as the best campsites, the Adirondack Rock guidebook lists the best campsites for climbers, for whatever that's worth. Might be best to just let your girl pick one on the water.

And I'm pretty sure the campground is open. I know there has been maintenance crews up there mowing and such. But don't take my word for it.

Not a lot of CHEAP lakeside camping as far as I know. Plenty of places to camp with access to the lake (5-10 minute walk). As far as I know Roger's Rock campground is open [ dec.ny.gov/outdoor/24493.html].

Lake George IMHO is a very overpriced/overcrowded place to stay (if you're a climber) unless you stay on the east shore along Buttermilk Falls/Hog Town/Shelving Rock Road. Plenty of free wilderness sites along the section of road nearest to the Lake, and also a path from a large parking area that leads down to Log Bay (at least that's what it's called on google maps). From here there's several climbing options, the best being Shelving Rock, and back up the road New Buck and Sleeping Beauty. Can also hike these mountains and all of them have views overlooking the Lake. There's an extensive system of trails between Shelving Rock, Sleeping Beauty, and Black Mt to the north. Lots of small ponds. It's a wilderness area so be prepared as you would heading into the woods. I'd recommend getting the national geographic eastern zone topo map if you plan on doing any hiking.

Shelving Rock has excellent views right from the belay. ;)

If she's looking for a cushy cheap Lake George option there really isn't one. For free/cheap lakeside activities you have to head elsewhere, and usually have to hike/backpack in a ways. Typically if it's in the ADKs and man has been allowed to develop near or around it, expect a price tag associated with the 'experience'. Also don't expect much privacy unless you go during mid-week.

Roger's Rock Campground is most definitely open. There's some beta on the "good" sites here. There are many beautiful lake-side sites at this campground.

Roger's Rock is awesome... My girl and I love camping there on the lake. We bring kayaks and inflatables to explore, climb and drink to excess. Anything on the left side of the map along the water is great beachfront camping. A little crowded yes but it's a great time with usually a really friendly crowd.

Campsite 54 is the bomb.29,31,33 are also sweet..

John, I'm in almost the exact same situation. I'm heading up to Lake George for a long weekend, July 20-22, with my girlfriend and another couple, all non-climbers. Give me a shout if you'd like to sneak in a climb or two. Maybe run up something easy on the slab one morning if our dates overlap.

Were you the noisy A-holes camped next to us a few years ago?

Seriously, the biggest problem IME at Rogers Rock campground is the rowdy campers. For whatever reason - I blame the proximity of high-power boats (long story but I saw the same boorish/scary sh:t at Watkins Glen cmpg) - there's a higher level of midnight noise, rowdiness and general mayhem than at other NYS campgrounds.

Can't deny that it's a great location for climbing though.

Great idea, except we're headed down August long weekend.

I'll be there the weekend of the 10th. Looks like a cool spot.

What the deal with not being able to swim without a lifeguard on duty? Is that enforced?

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
