Been mountaineering for a while but starting to get into technical canyoneering and am disappointed that beta is nearly impossible to find. I think that canyons would fit well here on mountain project. They would need to enable the different rating system but we already have at least 3 rating systems on the site so that shouldn't be too hard.

Anyone else think this would be a good idea?

I agree with Nicholas... canyoneering would be a nice addition to MP.

The beta is out there on many of the popular canyons. If you're descending into canyons that you cannot find beta on... consider yourself lucky. Personally, I think one of the more appealing aspects of technical canyoneering is the lack of beta and truer adventuring spirit of it.

I oppose, but would peruse.

I bet that most MPers would prefer to keep this site as is, as to not expose this site to say, non-climbing hikers, and canyoneering folks who may then start frequenting MP to join in the MP forums, and community, and such. I personally wouldn't mind it, as I'm a climber who also enjoys canyoneering, and would appreciate the great beta a canyoneering "climber" could offer, but I can envision that it might create some pot shots, and potholes within the MP climbing community further down canyon.

Just my 2 pennies. : )

I'm all for technical canyons being represented on MP. However, there is a forum catagory for Other Sports where info on this subject could reside. Also, canyoneering forums are out there on the Net but it would be intersting to hear about canyoning here too.

+1 for CanyonProject.com. Keep Mountain Project about climbing.

If they add canyoneering, they have to add sport rappelling too.

Please don't complain about a lack of info. Remember, most of the canyons in the world were explored LONG before the internet was around!

Adding canyons to MP would be similar to adding summit hikes, it can be an adventurous and physically demanding pursuit, but it isn't climbing and isn't in the spirit of the site. There is plenty of knowledge online if you know where to look.

Keep your slots to yourself please

I'd hate to see the outbursts that would stem from somebody's favorite "secret" slot canyon in BFE Utah or Arizona getting published on a high-traffic site.

If you thought climbers were territorial about their own private crags, wait until you see what canyoneers and cavers are capable of...

Ooooof, cavers can be downright homicidal, but I don't think canyoneers are as bad as cavers would be; being territorial, and protective, and all.

Tom's Canyoneering site is great; we've utilized it quite a bit, and there's also some detailed guidebooks from Kelsey (the guy that wears booty shorts), and others too that are quite good.

Yeah, Cavers make ice climbers look like reasonable, well adjusted members of society.

Since we're talking about geocaching, extreme rappelling, and disc golf, and all, I'll throw in bottle digging..

And bottle diggers make cavers look like reasonable boy scouts who are just mad that they couldn't get a girl scout. : )

Bottle digging is hardcore. They'd try to keep their sites a secret, and if one got to the others "claimed site" first, blood could, and most likely would be spilled. Of course, we're talking about more than just a sport, or hobby; bottle digging could produce thousands of dollars worth of finds. Imagine digging all day, and night in vacant lots, and behind unoccupied, and occupied boarded up homes in some of the worst neighborhoods of big inner cities (that's where some of the best unoccupied pre-1900 homes, and abandoned lots happen to be); Fending off drug dealers, pimps, and nosy toothless meth heads with your probes. Then here comes the PoPo; just try to explain to trigger happy cops that you're a professional bottle digger, and if they let you talk, proceed, and just try to educate them of the beauty of finding rare, embossed whiskies, sulphide marbles, and old German doll heads with glass eyes, and such, and see how long it takes for them to spray you (with Mace, that is), and arrest your ass. Seriously, it happened to my bottle digging partner - Well... he was trespassing at a time of night where even the freaks don't come out, sporting a big pointy metal probe, and shovels, and sitting in a gynormous dirty hole he had dug. You know you're looking rough, and dangerous when drug dealing folks in seedy neighborhoods call the cops on you! The folks probably thought he was burying a body, and the cops suspected he was digging up his drugs, was disposing a prostitute, and/or JPC (just plain crazy), since they couldn't comprehend what bottle digging was, despite the fuc$king antique bottles at their feet that he had just unearthed, and the generous free beta my partner tried giving them. : /

Okay, I'm done reminiscing, back to climbing.,,
