Warning Access Issue: Avoid the Golf Course DetailsDrop down

Description Suggest change

This area has around 15 known boulders. 8 of these are quality boulders and have been cleaned. Behind the boulders is a sandstone conglomerate cliff face that is about 500 ft long and 15ft to 40ft high and overhung 20-35 degrees. The rock seems solid. It is currently unbolted, but there is potential for a short sport crag with maybe 10+ routes. Short sections of this face have potential for additional boulder problems.

The Rainforest Boulders:

These boulders are some of the best I have seen in Eastern Newfoundland ! What makes these boulders special is they have overhanging problems which at the time of writing are not common on the Avalon. Definitely, some classic quality problems on these ! A must visit. In addition, there is a high concentration of problems compared to other areas. Potential for moderate overhanging sport routes on the cliff behind too !

Rain forest boulders are in a wooded area protected from the wind. A great winter bouldering spot (Oct-May) as on a sunny day it feels warm and protects from the wind. From May to October, the bugs will probably be bad depending on how warm its been.

The Rainforest Cliff:

Potential for 20ft-45ft easy to moderate overhanging sport crag. No bolts as of this writing. There also looks like 3-4 short trad lines.

Getting There Suggest change

Take the TCH West from St. John's. Get off at the Holyrood Access Road. Just after the golf course on your left there is a park on your left with a couple bridges. Park here. From the road, in front of the golf course you can see a cliff in the distance. The boulders are 50 ft from the base of this cliff. There is a trail that can be found around the outer edge of the golf course on the end near where you parked. Its marked with red/orange spray paint on trees and stumps. There is some flagging tape. Pink was used accross a bog section near the cliff. This is not another trail. Please try to find the trail without going on the golf course. This just causes problems for everyone. Alternatively, a bushwack towards the cliff by looking and heading in the general direction is possible and using google maps on your phone. This is how I found it. Approach is 20-25 min walk using the trail.
