The Puzzle Box is a beautiful roof with some of the finest climbing at the Draw, nearly horizontal at its base and easing gradually in steepness. There are around a dozen established problems here from V5 on up, including area classics Puffer Fish and Cosmic Tricycle. The rock quality is generally superb with some very unique holds and intriguing movement. Caution: this roof has a sloping, uneven landing zone and some dirty topouts.

Getting There

From the main parking area, hop the wooden fence and walk along the metal fence surrounding the aspen grove. Continue along a faint trail into a side draw and the Puzzle Box will appear shortly up on the right side. Approach 2 minutes.

The Puzzle Box's classic testpiece. Shares a start with Puffer Fish, on the bulging skirt near the middle of the roof. From the skirt, reach both hands out to the rail of sloping huecos, then bring your feet up to the roof and start heading left. At the end of the rail, pull to a big sloping undercling, which is matched with much difficulty (crux). Take a breath and reach for two round pockets, then finish with big slaps out the steep nose to a rockover topout. Long and sustained, with serious...[more]   Browse More Classics in AZ
