Storm over on Toms Thumb
Who's going to be in Potrero for the month of December? I am thinking of heading down there but can't find partners to go down with me, multiple people are still scared of the place. Has anyone been down there who could share some information on finding partners there for the month?

Thanks, Pablo

I can't speak for the current situation, but I was there two years ago over christmas, and there were enough climbers that finding a partner wasn't an issue. It seems like a busy time over that period, so the odds are probably higher of finding a partner than any other time. I have no idea how many climbers are there right now though.

Hanging out waiting for Die Antwoord to come on st...
I am heading down for Thanksgiving week if you end up getting there a little early. I was there over the same period last year as well. It seemed a-ok to me. There wasn't the size of crowd I expected, probably no more than 20 climbers in total. Everyone had a great time, and the Posada folks did a really nice spread for Thanksgiving evening. If you hit town early, I will be staying in the Casita at the Posada.

Thinking of taking a bus down at the end of December. I would be interested to hear about your experience. Trying to keep an open mind, but most people I have mentioned it to have also been sketched.

My wife and I will be in Potrero from 12/28 through 1/5, staying at Posada's. Exchanged a brief email with Magic Ed a day or so ago, and he said everything has been real quiet. It's hard not to feel a bit weird about what happened, but we are not changing our plans. The whole area was moderately busy the first trip we took down there over Christmas and New Year about 4 years ago. Thanksgiving time two years ago had decent group (though I was laid out with vertigo caused by inner ear issues, so my opinion should be assed in that context Lots of fun except that it was cold. Don't underestimate how chilly it can get down there, and don't underestimate how nice it can be at the crag while grizzle is coming down and Posadas. If there is any doubt in you mind about how bad its raining up a that Potrero, you must get your pack on and go check things out for yourself, get the "ground truth." We have been pleasantly surprised, I'll tell you what.

I went last year for march (not the busy season) solo and had no problems finding partners. The scene is very freindly and meeting people is super easy. December is the busiest month for potrero and finding partners should be a non issue. Since your rolling solo i would stay at la posada that is were you will have the best chance of meeting people.

I've taken the bus from San Antonio a handful of times and had no problems; the last time was January 2011, but I can't imagine things have changed that much since then. The highway is very busy with buses and trucks and vehicles, and the bus stations in Monterrey and Hidalgo are full of all sorts of people traveling. I guess anything could happen, but it just hasn't felt very dangerous or sketchy to me. It probably helps to speak some Spanish, as I think it's always somewhat anxiety provoking to not know what's going on around you. Let me know if you'd like more specific beta on the trip, as there are a couple of tricks to it.

Me!
Hi there!

I will be heading to El Potrero Chico for at least two, hopefully more, weeks in January and February. I have friends heading to the area by car from Jan 5-16th, and so after that I will be there solo. I would consider myself an intermediate climber, as this is my second year consistently climbing outside. I climb mostly trad now as I live 45 minutes from Yosemite Valley, but obviously I am not opposed to sport since I am going to Mexico! If you are around at that time I would love to meet up and climb.

Hi Kate, and anyone else heading to Potrero this winter,

I am planning on heading to the area by car as well, but won’t be there until early Feb (no set date yet), and will most likely be solo. If you do stay into Feb and are looking for a partner lets meet up. I also consider myself intermediate and enjoy climbing anything from .6 to .10+ depending on how strong I feel that day.

Kevin-
Sounds great! Let me know how your plans go. Right now I am waiting on friends to decide their dates but I will definitely be there in January into early February. PM me with future plans if you prefer that.

I'll be headed down there in mid-january until sometime in february. Does anyone have any beta on guidebooks for the area, like are they available down there or is mtnproject the best thing to use. I will be headed down with some folks that are intermediate climbers but i would love to get on some 11's and possibly scream my way thru some 12's. Looking forward to seeing everyone down!!! WOOHOO!!!

Hey shreddy,
I am under the impression that you can buy guidebooks at the local climbing shop if need be. Check out potrerochico.org/listing_type/...

See you down there!

Magic Ed has the most up-2-date guide book. You can buy it from him when you arrive. Check out his website: magicedspotrerochico.com
Don't bother with The Whole Enchilada as there are many more routes since it's publication!

EPC Report

We have been here going on two weeks now. Over thanksgiving there were some but not many climbers. At the moment there are about 10 plus gringos staying at different campsites/casitas here. Weather has improved from our first week which consisted of rain at night cool temps throughout the day(great weather for Outrage!). Sunny and warm as I write. Locals are out in small numbers on weekends but nothing crazy. We have been coming here for the past four years staying for two plus months at a time then heading farther south to climb in southern Mexico. By far this is the quietest we have ever seen.
Also, Dottie has the animal shelter up and running which is always welcoming donations. Bring down anything dog related if you have room! There is going to be a New Years fundraiser, raffle, climbing swag, food, margaritas. All money supporting the dogs in need!
Thanks,
Ope.

On Facebook it's the "Fiona Animal Rescue", please donate anything you can. To climb at the Potrero is to also fall in love with a lot of unfortunate dogs. Such a sweet add on to your EPC Report freeope.

I think I might have a relative here. Chico here was probably born in Oct 2008, has a brother somewhere in Colorado named Black Sabbath.

Any chance your dog is a fatter version of this one named Lola?
