Description 

This is the side of the Pao de Acucar (Sugar Loaf) that the cable car goes up over.

Shady in the mornings but could get hot in the summer after about 11 AM.

The Pao de Acucar is a granite/gneiss spire about 1000 feet high, visible from many parts of Rio.

Getting There 

From Botafogo/Flamengo just hug the shoreline and head past the Yacht Club into Urca.

From Lagoa/Jardim Botanico go past Humaita area and into Botafogo until you see Guanabara Bay, then right towards Urca.

From Barra/Sao Conrado/Ipanema/Copacabana hug the beaches until the end of Copacabana area called Leme and take a hard left at the Meridien hotel, past the tunnel and into Urca and hard right at the Yacht Club.

Once at the parking area for the cable car, head to the left end of the beach (Praia Vermelha). Go up the jogging trail about 150 yards and take a left up the hill and onto a jungle trail. At the top of the hill take a hard right towards the base of the west face.

6 pitches. 1st pitch has a short crack at the beginning, then diagonal right to the belay just up and left from the Italianos belay.Then pitches 2-5 trend left with some face climbing and VERY delicate slabby traverses. All these pitches are bolted but with some fairly long runouts between bolts by modern standards. Take long slings to keep down rope drag even on the bolted pitches.
