Description

Pietrasecca, literally meaning “dry stone”, is located in the Abruzzo region of Italy about an hour outside of Rome (Lazio).

Composed of limestone, this southern facing crag is mainly sunny, allowing for climbing early and late into the season. However in the summer, is best in the mornings and evenings. With over 70 routes ranging from 4b to 8c (5.8-5.14b), Pietrasecca offers a range of moderate to aggressive sport climbing within reasonable driving distance from Rome.

The scenic view of the mountains from this crag is slightly marred by the sight and sounds of the raised highway nearby. Routes are easy to find along the crag via painted (newly painted as of this posting in 2012) signs marking the names of each route.

According to PlanetMountain, “The crag has been re-equipped recently thanks to the local Yama Assocciation, and Pietrasecca recently made headline news with the first free ascent of "Shanghai", a 20 year-old project freed at 8c in June 2008 by Roberto delle Fratte. "La Morte" is the final big challenge through the steep overhang still waiting for its first free ascent.”

Getting There

From Rome, take the motorway A24 Rome - L'Aquila. Exit at Carsoli and then turn left following signs for Pietrasecca. Park your car in the small dirt lot beneath the crag on the righthand side of the road.

Cross the road where you will see netting and take the path at end of the netting (right of it) for a short approach to the crag.

See the parking area and approach entrance through Google Maps .
