Description

The pichinchas rise abruptly out Quito's western outskirts, offering a quick escape from the bustling metropolis. The massif is peaked by the recently (1999?) active Guagua (young in Quechua), further north is Padre Encantado-a small cerro which offers some multipitch rock climbing potential for the adventurous, and Ruco (old/sleepy one) being the furthest peak north. The latest becoming very popular and safe with the advent of the new(ish) teleferico. This area is packed with trails and on a clear day offers great views of the surrounding volcanoes.

Getting There

Ruco is the easiest to get to from Quito, just get yourself to the teleferico (cabs from the Mariscal district are usually 4-5$). The small agricultural town of Lloa is the best place to arrange transportation to Guagua's spartan refuge. Walking up from town (~10km) is also a good option, just don't get hit by zooming cyclists.
